In all of them the color line was firmly drawn, and any amount ofAfrican heritage established the race of a person as black, with little regard as to whether the person was slave or free. Landowners turned to African slaves as a more profitable and ever-renewable source of labor and the shift from indentured servants to racial slavery had begun.

Some, however, addressed only women.

In the Chesapeake, shift to slave labor was gradual and because English common law did not acknowledge chattel slavery, it was possible for some to be freed by Christian baptism, purchase freedom from owners, or win freedom in courts, etc.
