Dally and Johnny may at first seem similar, as they are both greasers, but upon closer inspection, we see that Dally is indeed a true criminal, whereas Johnny is just a small-time hood who is trying to fit in, despite his apparent sensitivity. I may just be over analyzing her character, but I also think that this would be a good question to ask Flagg.

Dally's death loses much of its impact because viewers aren't able to get to know him. The same is true for the rest of the gang, even Dally. In the book, Darry just slaps him across the face. They waited over a DECADE to make this and i hope that the reason for the delay was because they wanted to make it good and not just another movie series that gets dropped.

In the movie, when Pony comes home from the lot at two in the morning, Darry shoves him hard and he falls and whatnot.

The Outsiders

Viewers don't see the growth in his character, because they don't know Johnny. Ponyboy has a literary bent, which Hinton uses to show that poverty does not necessarily mean boorishness or lack of culture, and that gang members are not always delinquents.
